Bust of Alexander I of Russia

Made by WOOD & CALDWELL

Half-length, wearing full military uniform, his head turned slightly to the left.  Impressed on the reverse "Alexander Aet. 35 Moscow Burnt Europe Preserved 1812".  Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL", "Burslem".   Dark brown colour with a pale face.  Height 30.5cm.  This model also exists Painted all over in black enamel, on waisted socle base. .  Mentioned on page 167 of "English Earthenware Figures", by Pat Halfpenny, published 1991.

Bust of Alexander.  Noted as by WOOD & CALDWELL.  Height approximately 30cm.  This version has much more colour. Image on page 73 of "Staffordshire Portrait Figures" by John Hall, published 1972.
